Villa Malfatti

La Storia

Costruita all’inizio dell’Ottocento dalla cantante lirica Teresa Belloc, probabilmente su progetto del Pechenino, la villa fu acquistata nel 1888 dal barone trentino Stefano Malfatti di Monte Tretto e radicalmente ristrutturata. In seguito non ha subito altri interventi, se non di ordinaria manutenzione, ed è tuttora dimora dei discendenti Malfatti. L’edificio attuale è ispirato a un disegno misto di classico e di barocco, con due grandi terrazze sul lato verso il fabbricato rurale. Sotto quella inferiore si apre un grande atrio nel quale campeggia la frase latina AMPHION THEBES THERESIA VILLAM. Con queste parole Teresa Belloc volle immortalare la costruzione della sua casa, avvenuta grazie alla voce di grande interprete rossiniana, richiamando il mito di Anfione, che con il suono della lira trasportò i mattoni per erigere il muro di Tebe. 

History

Built at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the opera singer
Teresa Belloc – and thought to be the work of the architect Pechenino –the villa was purchased in 1888 and radically restored by the Trentino Baron Stefano Malfatti, of Monte Tretto. His design remains to this day – the house has not undergone any many alterations aside from usual maintenance – and the villa remains the home of Malfatti’s descendants.
The current building is inspired by both classical and baroque designs, with two large terraces facing a neighbouring rural building. A large portico inscribed with the Latin phrase AMPHION THEBES THERESIA VILLAM can be found beneath the lower terrace; with these words, Teresa Beloc wished to immortalise her beloved home’s construction, recalling the myth of Anfione who, with the sound of the lyre, animated bricks and erected the wall of Thebes.
